A Message From Dana
If you’ve ever felt lost, stuck, or unsure of what to do with your life, I can relate. It feels like ages ago when I worked as a broadcast news reporter, part-time television anchor, general assignment reporter, and photojournalist at the CBS-affiliated station, KCBY, in the small town of Coos Bay, Oregon. The position was aptly called “One Man Banding,” a term for handling everything on your own, including producing, interviewing, shooting photography, writing, editing, and being the on-air personality. It was challenging, yet great fun.
Then came a career move to the jointly owned FOX and ABC news affiliates, WATM and WWCP in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, where my role involved covering crime and the court system.
Before my on-air broadcast career, I earned degrees in Photography and Politics from Ithaca College in upstate New York, followed by a Master of Arts in International Journalism and Public Affairs at the American University in Washington, D.C.
Throughout all this, I maintained a passion for capturing moments in people’s lives. As a young photojournalist, my mentors included internationally recognized reporters, photojournalists, and news directors. I learned from the best, and my career took me around the world, from exotic locales in Southeast Asia to Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
Eventually, I returned to my hometown, San Diego. I had become disenchanted with on-air news reporting and decided to leave the television news world. I felt stuck, unsure of what to do next.
In the end, I picked up my camera and followed my curiosity. I began working as a freelance writer and photographer for newspapers across the country, and gained recognition for my nationally syndicated dating column, “Single Situations.” This work won me first place in the Excellence in Journalism Awards from the San Diego Press Club. My weekly dating column regularly featured in newspapers from Washington DC to Boston, Phoenix, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Vancouver, Seattle, and of course, San Diego.
As my writing and photography work continued, my curiosity kept growing. Being an assistant never satisfied me. I didn't enjoy 12-hour workdays. I had a bigger picture in mind. That’s when my idea of starting my own business, combined with my love for capturing the magic in people’s lives, came to fruition. My photography studio was born out of my own curiosity and passion for life.
Aside from my career, I cherish being outdoors and enjoying all that living in Southern California has to offer. Sailing is my favorite sport. Being on the water with the sails full and a gentle wind is where I find my inner calm. I am a distance runner and enjoy the mountains when I can ski, as well as lazy beach days with my two boys, Spencer and Will. Sometimes we even bring Vivi and Chewbacca, our two big Briard pups, with us!
P.S. If my story resonates with you, please drop me a comment and let me know. If you appreciate my work, I'd be grateful if you could share this on social media, Google reviews, Facebook, Instagram, Nextdoor, Yelp, etc. Word-of-mouth recommendations are always the best.
